Kospi opens higher on tech gains

Stocks opened 3.57 percent higher Friday as Samsung Electronics and SK hynix gained after overnight strength in U.S. tech shares.

Stocks opened sharply higher Friday, led by gains in major technology heavyweights, following overnight advances on Wall Street.

The benchmark Kospi rose 260.58 points, or 3.57 percent, to 7,552.49 at the opening bell.

Overnight, U.S. stocks closed higher, buoyed by a strong rebound in semiconductor shares and easing oil prices.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.27 percent, while the S&P 500 rose 0.81 percent. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite climbed 1.3 percent.

Market bellwether Samsung Electronics advanced 3.6 percent, while its chipmaking rival SK hynix surged 4.02 percent.
