Co-hosted by the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage (Nrich) under the KHS and the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (Iccrom), the conference will be held on July 13 and 14 at the Grand Josun Hotel in Haeundae District, Busan.
Iccrom is an intergovernmental organization established by Unesco, dedicated to the conservation and restoration of global cultural heritage through research, education, technical support and international cooperation. It currently has 139 member states.
The conference, now into its fourth edition this year, is part of amemorandum of understanding signed between Nrich and Iccrom in June 2023.
Under the main theme “Timeless Issues on Heritage,” this year’s edition will adopt a new name, the “Nrich-Iccrom Annual International Conference,” going beyond archaeological discussions — which were previously the main focus — to broader fields such as safety and disaster prevention and conservation and management.
The event will run under two subthemes: "Cultural Heritage Driving Social Change" in archaeology and "Investigation and Monitoring of Heritage Using Advanced Technologies" in safety and disaster prevention, conservation and management.

On its first day, the sessions will examine how cultural heritage does not remain in the past but functions and transforms within today's political, economic and social environments, citing various international case studies. The session will feature four presentations.
On the second day, the sessions will focus on proactive measures to safeguard and monitor cultural heritage amidst recent crises such as climate change and rising disasters by using advanced digital and space technologies as well as international standards. The day will feature one keynote speech by Rand Eppich, a consultant to Iccrom and Unesco, and six presentations.
Panel discussions will follow the presentations on both days to explore how the authenticity and value of heritage have impacted our society and discuss new possibilities to safeguard, conserve and manage heritage sites using advanced technologies.
"Nrich under the KHS hopes that the international conference will serve as an opportunity to deeply reflect on the authenticity and value of heritage and open new horizons for its conservation through the integration of cutting-edge technologies," the heritage agency said in a press release. "Furthermore, Nrich will continue to collaborate with Iccrom to ensure that Korea's major cultural heritage is investigated, conserved and utilized amidst global attention."
Online registration for the conference is available via the QR code on the official poster. Further details can be found on the Nrich website and social media accounts.
