Hyosung Group opens first AI data center in Seoul

Hyosung Group's STT Seoul 1 data center is designed to support a wide range of cloud and AI deployments. Its location in the capital also allows low-latency data transmissions to key business districts such as Gangnam and Yeouido.

Hyosung opened its first data center in Geumcheon District, southern Seoul, marking its earnest entrance into the AI sector. 

The Korean company said on Wednesday that the STT Seoul 1 data center — which was built in partnership with ST Telemedia Global Data Centres — has a capacity of 30 megawatts and is designed to support a wide range of cloud and AI deployments.

Unlike many large-scale data centers on the outskirts of the capital, Hyosung’s facility is situated in southern Seoul, allowing low-latency data transmissions to key business districts such as Gangnam and Yeouido.

“STT Seoul 1 will serve as critical infrastructure that supports the growth of Korea’s AI industry and as a milestone that strengthens its future competitiveness,” Hyosung Group Chairman Cho Hyun-joon said during the opening ceremony on Tuesday.

“Hyosung had long believed that data would become the oil of the 21st century and recognized that AI […] would increasingly define national competitiveness,” he added. “This led to us making the data center business a new growth engine of Hyosung, and we will help reshape the future of the global AI ecosystem.”

Hyosung Heavy Industries will leverage its expertise in ultrahigh-voltage transformers, circuit breakers and energy-efficiency technologies to ensure the center’s operational stability and power efficiency.

Hyosung ITX will also apply its existing IT expertise in cloud services, content delivery networks and digital transformation solutions to the group’s data center operations. It also plans to strengthen the center’s technical reliability and operational stability through traffic optimization and security management systems.
